WHAT:
Hynes Charter School will host a dedication of its new Memory Garden, featuring three nursery-school mosaics saved from the original school site which was constructed in 1952.  The tiles adorned the former school building’s walkway and were saved from demolition by efforts from the neighboring community.  To many, preserving the tiles represents the resilience and renewal of the Lakeview community and the high-performing charter.

The garden will also be dedicated in memory of a retired Hynes teacher who lost her battle with an illness earlier this year.

WHY:
Hynes Charter School, located in Lakeview, was completely destroyed by 8 feet of flood waters.  In January 2012, Hynes came back home to Lakeview, moving into its brand new, state-of-the-art facility on its former site. Today, Hynes is a high performing public school serving 700 students.
Hynes Charter School is recognized by the Louisiana Department of Education as an A- rated school. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS-CASI) continues to accredit the programs at Hynes.  The school is proud of its diverse population.  It offers a challenging academic curriculum that includes a progressive literacy program, gifted and talented courses, a partnership with the UNO College of Education, classes in art, special education, computer, instrumental music, vocal music, library, theater and physical education. It boasts an exceptionally low student- teacher ratio of 18:1. The Hynes staff is 100 percent certified with over 40 percent holding Masters Degrees or higher in Education. In addition, Hynes offers a French Immersion program for grades Kindergarten-thru-5th that instructs students in Math, Science, and Social Studies using the French language in an applied manner. Students enrolled in traditional classes are also enrolled in 30 minutes of French language per day. Hynes is proud of the collaborative culture that it fosters with distributed leadership and shared decision-making.
