Sci High to hold Open House on November 8

New Orleans Charter Science and Math High School “Sci High” will hold an Open House for parents and prospective students on Thursday, November 8 from 5:00-7:00p.m. at its campus at 5625 Loyola Ave. in Uptown New Orleans.

Parents and students are invited to learn more about Sci High, tour the campus and meet the faculty and staff.   

“Sci High” is the highest performing open-enrollment science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) school in the state. Sci High offers students cutting-edge and industry-focused STEM electives. Sci High was given the National Society of High School Scholars Foundation’s Class Nobel School of Distinction Award for its academic efforts.

New Orleans Charter Science and Math High School, “Sci High,” has appointed Dr. Monique G. Cola, PhD. as its new Principal of the high school.  Sci High, located at 5625 Loyola Ave. in Uptown New Orleans. is one of the highest performing open-enrollment science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) schools in the state. 
 
“Out of a strong pool of highly qualified candidates, Dr. Cola stood out from the start,” said Mary Zervigon, Board Chair, Advocates for Science & Mathematics Education Inc.  “We are thrilled to have such a committed, experienced and passionate STEM leader and cannot wait to see what the future holds for Sci High under her leadership.”

Sci High to host Health 360

On the morning of Friday, November 17, Sci High will be hosting its 5th annual Health 360, an interactive fair that highlights physical and emotional wellness, strategies for healthy living and careers in Health Care and STEM fields. The event will take place at Sci High’s campus on 5625 Loyola Ave, New Orleans, LA.

The event, from 8am-12pm, will consist of three segments, providing every Sci High student with the opportunity to participate in group physical activities, attend two Wellness Workshops, and meet with three local professionals. The goal is for students to leave Health 360 with a greater understanding of how to strive toward a life style of holistic health and how their current academic course work relates to the in demand, high wage STEM career opportunities present in the Greater New Orleans area.

This event is the culmination of the Summer Internship Program and the celebration of the accomplishments of the 75 Sci High Interns that held paid internship placements around the city. The internships engage community partnerships, local industry, and student ambition.

Foundation for Science and Mathematics Education Chosen as 2017 Blue Bunny Helmet of Hope Semi-finalist

The Foundation for Science and Mathematics Education, the non-profit that provides support for New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School, is a 2017 Blue Bunny Helmet of Hope Semi-finalist, with the chance of receiving a $25,000 grant.   

The FDSME Foundation is one of 10 organizations competing for the Jimmie Johnson Foundation/Blue Blue Bunny Helmet of Hope national award, but the only one from Louisiana.

Online votes for the top five organizations will determine a $25,000 cash grant, to be used by winners to enhance K-12 public education programs. Each winner also will receive a Blue Bunny Ice Cream party and their logo will be featured on Jimmie Johnson’s race helmet during the NASCAR Cup race on Sunday, August 13th at Michigan International Speedway.

Voting takes place from noon, May 5 through noon, May 12. Each person can vote for FSME repeatedly.  Visit www.helmetofhope.org to vote.

WHAT:        
Approximately 100 students will participate in Sci High’s 5th Annual Science Fair.  This event is in preparation for their participation in the Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair later this year.  Student’s projects will be judged by community members for prizes and a chance at an entry spot into the Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair.

WHY:        
Sci High is an open admissions high school that specializes in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education.  For the Science Fair, the students all picked their own topics to do projects on. Some examples are: "Does the amount of carbon dioxide affect the lifespan of a plant?" and "Does the size of a potato affect how much voltage it stores?"
 
Sci High is an open-enrollment, tuition-free, public charter high school, grades 9-12.  Sci High is highest performing open-enrollment high school in the city and one of the best high schools in Louisiana according to the U.S. News & World Report.
