Volunteers in field now across Louisiana to enroll eligible men and women in assistance programs Nearly one out of every two Louisiana seniors and adults with disabilities are eligible for additional assistance paying for their Medicare premiums, co-pays or Part D expenses but do not know how to apply to receive all the benefits for which they are eligible, reports from the National Council on Aging show. “Louisiana Aging and Disability Resource Centers and their partners are in the field now trying to assist older adults and adults with disabilities who are eligible to receive Medicare and enroll them into additional assistance programs like the Medicare Savings Plan or the Low Income Subsidy Program,” said Michelle Guillory, Program Manager, Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs Over 253,000 additional men and women will turn 65 before 2020, and one in every five of these new beneficiaries will be eligible for additional assistance programs, said Ms. Guillory. “So we have a lot of work to do,” she added. A public service campaign will be caring this message especially during May, Older Americans Month. Seniors are encouraged to call the Louisiana Aging and Disability Resource Center nearest them now and ask for the following:
“To get the extra help, let us help you apply,” said Ms. Guillory. The assistance is free and offered through the Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs. UNIVERSITY VIEW ACADEMY, formerly Louisiana Connections Academy, WILL ALLOW ENROLLED STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN TWO-YEAR COLLEGE ASSOCIATES OR TECHNICAL DEGREE FOR FREE SAVES STUDENTS COLLEGE ENROLLMENT COSTS; ENHANCES STUDENT SUCCESS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL University View Academy, the state’s leading provider of high-quality, free public online charter schooling for grades K through 12, is now the only Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education-authorized public charter school to offer a K-14 degree program to any enrolled student in any parish through its virtual platform. “Starting in the 2017-2018 school year, any high school student is now allowed to earn an associate’s degree from one of Louisiana’s community colleges, along with their high school diploma,” said UView Superintendent Lonnie Luce. “Thus, our graduates will have saved two-years of costs towards a college degree or be prepared to enter a technical field with a higher rate of pay.” University View Academy, formerly Louisiana Connections Academy, serves approximately 2300 families with a high-quality public education provided by certified Louisiana teachers. The K-14 program will be limited to pre-qualified students, said Dr. Luce. U View Academy provides each family a laptop, curriculum, and support for the parent or adult who monitors the child’s accountability to the program. Dr. Luce said University View Academy is educating its students to prepare for advanced education and technological prowess. “From the moment a student enters our virtual classrooms, they are oriented towards pursuing their maximum development in one of two pathways: university transfer credit or career development/Jump Start. By the time they graduate with their University View diploma, they have also completed two years of college-credit courses,” said Dr. Luce. “Technically, we are now a K-14 school to every student who desires this track.” “The bonus each student gets from our school is we orient them towards their best future and help them expand their ability to get a quality education or job after graduation,” said Dr. Luce. “For parents, we’re also saving their student two years of advanced education costs, so four years of TOPS dollars are still available.” Enrollment is open now for all grades. Interested families can attend one of the school’s enrollment information sessions in person or online. Those interested in the K-14 diploma track should ask for the Early College Program. The information sessions and locations through May 30 are as follows: More than 1800 businesses, organizations, and local officials from every state have signed a letter calling on members of Congress to restore America’s deteriorating national park infrastructure. As the National Park Service (NPS) enters its second century it is facing almost $12 billion in crucial repairs to aging historical structures and thousands of miles of roads and trails, bridges, tunnels, sewers, drainage, visitor centers, and other vital infrastructure across its 400-plus sites.
The letter was delivered on April 4 to Capitol Hill lawmakers who lead House and Senate Committees with jurisdiction over Department of the Interior funding. National parks in Louisiana account for over $15 million of the repair backlog. Signatories are calling on Congress to support guaranteed funding to help chip away at the backlog, to implement policy reforms to prevent the NPS backlog from continuing to grow; to approve more Highway Trust Fund money to pay for costly NPS transportation needs; and to provide for more public-private opportunities to address infrastructure repairs at our national parks. In Louisiana alone, there are nearly 200 letter supporters. Among those who have signed are the Louisiana Travel Promotion Association, New Orleans Chamber of Commerce, Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitors Bureau, Madison Parish Tourism, Natchitoches Convention and Visitors Bureau, Preservation Resource Center, and Louisiana Landmarks Society. Resolutions in support of NPS funding have been passed by City of New Orleans, St. Bernard Parish, City of Monroe, City of Leesville, and City of Natchitoches. Hynes Charter School will celebrate its 2nd Annual FrancoFest to promote the culture of francophone countries and highlight its French Immersion and Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools (FLES) programs. The future of the state of Louisiana depends on how willing we are to care for and prepare our youngest citizens. High quality early care and education will prepare our students for a smart start in life, enable families to be productive in the workforce, and serve as an economic engine for local communities. That is why we support expanding access to high quality early learning across the state of Louisiana by restoring funding for early care and education.
We believe that young children in Louisiana should have access to high quality early care and education that ensures they are off to a smart start in life. Ninety percent of brain development takes place between birth and age four, wiring a child’s brain for future success or failure in school, work, and life. Yet in Louisiana, we know that more than 40% of Kindergartners start school behind their peers – and those who start behind are more likely to stay behind. However, quality early care and education can close this gap by developing cognitive and character skills when it matters most. For this reason, we are committed to greater investment in early care and education. |
