All the excitement is building up for the first ever Miss Louisiana Variety Show on Friday, June 28, featuring more than 30 former Miss Louisiana's of the past 50 years, including 2012 Miss Louisiana Lauren Vizza. The pageant is Saturday at 8 p.m.

Now, thanks to the actions of the Jefferson Parish School Board, the non-profit will launch a new open enrollment, arts-integrated charter school at the Kate Middleton Campus, 1407 Virgil St. in Gretna for the 2013-14 school year. LEESVILLE-Fort Polk Progress attributed the Army’s announcement today that the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk is not among the installations affected by the Army’s reduction of its active component brigade combat teams (BCTs) to strong community support and the leadership of communities from across the region.
The Army’s decision, associated with the active component end-strength reduction of 80,000 soldiers to 490,000 -- a 14 percent reduction across the force -- by 2017, was announced earlier today. The force structure process has also been referred to as “Army 2020.” As the charter school movement continues to grow in Louisiana, strong, quality governing boards are at the heart of sustaining these reform efforts. So the Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools is hosting two one-day seminars to help charter school boards master the seven pillars of success, announced LAPCS Executive Director Caroline Roemer Shirley.
The events are free. The July 12 event in New Orleans is for current board members or those who need a refresher course. The July 13 Baton Rouge event is designed for the board members of newly authorized charter schools opening for the 2013-2014 school year. Pre-registration is required. Dewana Little, Executive Director of the Miss Louisiana Organization; Wayne Gentry, producer of the live televised finals; and the major television sponsors will be in attendance. This will also be the first opportunity to meet the 36 contestants vying for the title of Miss Louisiana.
The 50th Anniversary events will culminate with the crowning of a new Miss Louisiana on June 29th at the Monroe Civic Center’s W.L. ”Jack” Howard Theatre. Preliminary competition will be held Wednesday, June 26th and Thursday, June 27th at 7:30 pm. There will be a variety show featuring our former Miss Louisiana’s Friday, June 28th at 7:30pm and the live televised finals will feature the top ten contestants on Saturday, June 29th at 8 pm.
