Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy (KDHSA), a high performing K-12 charter school located at 2504 Maine Avenue, has joined the 12-school Eastbank Collaborative of Charter Schools (ECCS), a non-profit established to protect the autonomy and sustainability of New Orleans area charters through shared services, networking and advocacy, announced President Alexina Medley. Established in 2006, ECCS is directed by Dr. Rose Peterson who facilitates services among the member schools, thereby helping them reduce costs by exploring economies of scale, sharing resources, offering operational grants, and helping schools navigate local, state and federal educational regulations and activities. “Our collaborative is a strong, interactive alliance which helps charters protect their structure, durability and operations,” said President Medley. All ECCS schools do not use Charter Management Organizations, and are independently run by local non-profit boards.
The existing 12 member schools are Audubon Charter School, Benjamin Franklin High School, Einstein Charter Schools, Hynes Charter School, International School of Louisiana (ISL), Lake Forest Elementary Charter, Lusher Charter School, Robert Russa Moton Charter, New Orleans Charter Science and Math High School “Sci High”, Andrew Wilson Charter School, Morris Jeff Community School and Warren Easton Charter High. Founded in 2012 by CEO Patty Glaser, Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy (KDHSA) is one of the highest performing public charter schools in Jefferson Parish. The school prides itself on the creative and rigorous academic learning environment and strong school culture it has developed for college and career readiness in health and sciences, technology, and project–based learning. As a result of the ECCS’ expansion into Jefferson Parish Schools with KDHSA and earlier with ISL’s Jefferson Parish Bunche campus, ECCS will now provide Jefferson Parish School Briefs to review the agendas and actions of the parish school board. ECCS already provides this service for the Orleans Parish School Board, and the RSD as it affects Orleans, as well as the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education meetings.
