Louisiana Connections Academy open to displaced families

Louisiana Connections Academy, a K-12, free, state certified public school conducted completely online by Louisiana teachers, welcomes students in all grades while individual school districts in the 20 impacted areas recover from the historic 2016 floods, announced Superintendent Lonnie Luce.
           
Superintendent Luce said State Superintendent of Education John White encouraged public schools to step up and help displaced families.
           
"Louisiana Connections Academy is proud to respond to the State's request and enroll children in all grades from impacted school districts, whether the flooded school was private, parochial or public," said Dr. Luce.
           
Parents can begin the process immediately by logging into the school's website at www.louisianaconnectionsacademy.com, visiting the school campus at the Russell J. Henderson Building, first floor, 4664 Jamestown Ave., Baton Rouge, or calling the school at 800-382-6010 or 225-372-8398.

The affected parishes are Acadia, Ascension, Avoyelles, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Evangeline, Jefferson Davis, Vermillion, Lafayette, Livingston, Tangipahoa, West Feliciana, Iberia, Iberville, Point Coupee, Washington, St. Landry, St. Helena, St. Tammany, St. James. and St. John.
           
"The historic flooding across the region means many people are displaced, homes are destroyed and schools are interrupted. As a result, our school is now allowed by the state to increase enrollment," Superintendent Luce confirmed. "At Louisiana Connections Academy we can offer a sense of normalcy for students through online classes. We are a high-rated public school specializing in college prep, K through 12, with certified teachers and a state approved curriculum." 
                
According to Communications Director Michael Marsh, parents considering this option should act fast as the school expects its additional seats to fill up quickly with students from across the impacted areas. The school also announced it is seeking to employ eight additional certified Louisiana teachers for high school grades.
           
"Success in an online school like ours is dictated by having a motivated adult at home, especially for the earlier grades," said Mr. Marsh. "If the parent or adult will provide the access to the internet for the student, we will supply the computer and materials. Louisiana Connections Academy has a staff that can support students and parents who want this option while traditional school districts rebuild. We are sensitive to the needs of districts that have suffered devastating losses and are willing to support them and your local schools, even on a short term basis."  
           
Superintendent Luce reiterated that students who take this option, so that they do not miss a single day of school for the 2016-2017 school year are welcome to return to their normal school once it is reopened. Louisiana Connections Academy was opened in Louisiana five years ago and currently serves more than 2100 children in grades K-12.
