Morris Jeff Community School Recognized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to Offer Middle Years Programme in Grades 6-10 Morris Jeff Community School, the only World School of the International Baccalaureate Organization in Orleans Parish offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP) to grades K-5, is proud to announce that it has been authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to now offer the Middle Years Programme in grades 6-10, said Morris Jeff Principal Patricia Perkins. “This recognition comes on the heels of much work over the past three years to plan, prepare, and execute units of study that are written by our faculty and approved by the IBO,” said Principal Perkins. “It gives us the capability to expand our unique program and continue the high quality level of global learning we are known for.” Morris Jeff is currently accepting applications for grades PK-10, with a grade added each year until the school is PK-12. Morris Jeff will ultimately offer the International Baccalaureate’s globally recognized Diploma Years Programme to its high school students by the school year 2019-2020. “The International Baccalaureate Organization is an outstanding group with an impeccable reputation,” said Orleans Parish School Board President John A. Brown, Sr. "It is wonderful that Morris Jeff will now be able to offer this world renowned academic experience to their 6-10 graders.”
The MYP is a challenging, five-year program (6-10th grade) that encourages students to make connections between subjects and apply their knowledge to the real world. In Years 1 through 3, MYP students take eight subjects: Arts (Performing or Visual), Design, Individuals and Societies, Language Acquisition, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Physical and Health Education and Science. In Year 3, all MYP students complete a Community Project where students, individually or collaboratively, complete a service project that they design. “The International Baccalaureate program is as challenging as it is prestigious. By expanding the program to grades 6-10, Morris Jeff is reaffirming its commitment to raising expectations for all students and to providing them a well-rounded academic experience that will prepare them to thrive in an increasingly globalized world. The entire Morris Jeff community should be commended for this great accomplishment,” said Kunjan Narechenia, Superintendent, Recovery School District (RSD). The MYP is meant to teach students academic independence and to develop MYP students’ personal, social and emotional well-being. It offers students opportunities to develop their potential, explore their own learning preferences, take appropriate risks, and develop a strong sense of personal identity. By 8th grade, students are able to communicate in at least two languages, English and Spanish, and be prepared for academic excellence in high school. Morris Jeff is a top-performing, open-admissions, PK-10 public charter school serving more than 890 students in Orleans Parish. The PYP, grades PK-5, and MY, grades 6-10, provide a rigorous framework for academic curriculum that crosses disciplines and aligns with Common Core State Standards for learning. Board member Sarah Newell Usdin said: “Congratulations to Principal Perkins and the entire Morris Jeff team for their many years of hard work on this effort. It is inspiring to see educators go above and beyond to help prepare our students for the future. Many thanks!” Morris Jeff is a ONE APP school. Applicants should go to enrollnola.org to apply.
