Registration is now open for the 5th Annual District Attorney’s Academy, hosted by Orleans DA Leon Cannizzaro and for the first time in the popular program’s history it is offering Continuing Legal Education credits to attorneys, announced organizer Anne Kiefer. The first class begins Tuesday September 8 and continues for seven consecutive Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., Orleans DA's Grand Jury Room, 619 South White St. Registration is limited to 40 participants. The registration packet can be downloaded at www.kreweoftruth.com. The Academy is a Community Outreach project of the Orleans DA's Office created to ensure the safety of the New Orleans community through the education of citizens in the criminal justice system and how to effective interact with all its parts. “Whether they are victims, witnesses, jurors, attorneys, Neighborhood Watch participants, professionals who interact or concerned individuals just wanting to learn more, all are encouraged to attend these information-packed classes. We will teach you what we do and how we do it. All are encouraged to ask questions and grade us on our presentation. We care about the job we do for you,” said Ms. Kiefer.
DA Cannizzaro will greet the first class and present an overview of the criminal justice system. This Academy is proud to be sponsored by Crimestoppers and Ms. Darlene Cusanza, Executive Director, who will also address the class with the DA. Some of the topics covered will be: Screening and Appeals, Investigations, Worthless Checks, Prosecuting A Rape Case, Prosecuting a Homicide, Gang Violence, Narcotics, Social Services (Diversion, Victim/Witness Assistance, Domestic Violence Counseling), Juvenile Crime and Child Support.
