Louisiana Connections Academy, a virtual public charter school serving students from K-12, held a graduation ceremony for its Kindergarten class on June 7, 2013 at Greenwood Community Park Center in Baker. Students came from all over the Louisiana to take part in the school's ceremony. Family, friends, teachers and school representatives attended the ceremony to celebrate the students’ successes.
Neighborhoods Outline “Seven Essential Items” to Make Noise Ordinance Work for New Orleans6/18/2013 Thirteen neighborhood organization leaders from every corner of the city encouraged the City Council to finish a four-year process to fix the city’s currently flawed noise ordinance.
After numerous meetings and studies, and spurred on by increasing expansion of festivals and unregulated neighborhood clubs, the coalition of neighborhoods say they want to be sure music and culture is protected, and the assault from unregulated, amplified noise is contained. “A noise regulation system that is fair and functional is actually pro music,” said Coalition Chair Nathan Chapman, a local businessman who 20 years ago moved his residence because of chronic noise problems. “It protects the health and hearing of our musicians and it allows a higher quality, more enjoyable listening experience.” Taking it upon themselves to organize, the neighborhood organizations agreed on seven essential items to fix the city’s noise ordinance and presented them to the Council leaders. CLASS ACTION FILED AGAINST EXXON FOR MULTIPLE CHEMICAL LEAKS IN BATON ROUGE AREA Residents of Standard Heights invited to join lawsuit Residents and property owners of East Baton Rouge filed a class action lawsuit today against Exxon Mobil refinery and it subsidiaries due multiple chemical leaks. According to the suit filed on behalf of more than 10 residents who live in Standard Heights, a community within a two-mile radius of the Exxon plant, a bleeder plug at the Exxon Facility’s Aromatics Production Unit leaked benzene and other hazardous substances on June 14, 2012 but Exxon never notified the public of attendant health or other dangers. Exxon claimed the incident resulted in a leak greater than 10 pounds. June 12, 2013

On Tuesday, Associated Press writer Richard Lardner reported that the Senate Armed Services readiness subcommittee rejected the Defense Department's request to close installations and facilities in the United States that are no longer needed as the military branches cut the number of troops in uniform. In addition, Lardner reported, the House Armed Services Committee last week also rejected more base closings, and even took the step of adding a provision barring the Pentagon from even planning for another round.
