When Cheryl Smith thinks of Louisiana Connections Academy, she not only thinks of it as the place her son receives his education, but also as the place that changed his life.
Cheryl’s son, Christopher, has autism, and at age four was diagnosed with a very severe form. Christopher was not able to follow any commands, had zero participation with others, and was barely able to communicate. “I was willing to accept whatever issues Christopher had,” said Cheryl. “I just wanted to help him.” She and her husband would take Christopher to mental therapy twice a week, as well as private speech therapy, private occupational therapy, and school therapy. “We literally bombarded him with therapy,” said Cheryl. Christopher was enrolled in Springfield Public Elementary School, an area outside Hammond, Louisiana, where faculty and staff did an exceptional job of helping him with his needs. Louisiana Connections Academy Principal Glenda Jones is encouraging families to explore virtual charter schooling, which is one of the public education options available for students in every parish of the state, particularly if a student in grades 8 to 11 is unhappy or under-performing. "Sometimes students need a break from the traditional brick-and-mortar setting and find that a virtual public charter school can help them catch up or take a break from the day-to-day peer pressures of high school," said Principal Jones. "We provide a change of mindset." “We welcome mid-year enrollment,” said Board President Wade Henderson. “Let us show you what great opportunities we offer every child in Louisiana." According to Principal Jones, the top reasons for mid-year switching in high school grades are: So, the holiday break is upon you and there is no avoiding one reality: Your child is miserable in their school.
This might not be what you wanted to concentrate on during the winter break, but it’s not uncommon. In Louisiana, some families are finding the switch to a free, public virtual school meets their needs. “Changing to a virtual charter school is not just a change of venue, but a change of mindset,” said Louisiana Connections Academy Principal Glenda Jones. 2014 Keeping Pace with K-12 Digital Learning Report Released: Live Web Press Conference Nov. 310/29/2014 The 2014 Keeping Pace with K-12 Digital Learning report will be released by Evergreen Education Group on Monday, November 3.
