Morris Jeff Community School to Host Open Houses  for grades PK-11th

Morris Jeff Community School will hold Open House events for prospective students in Pre-Kindergarten - 8th grade on Tuesday, October 23 from 6:00pm-7:30pm at its Lopez campus, 211 S. Lopez St. in Mid-City and for grades 9-11 on Thursday, November 1 from 6:00pm -7:30pm at the Clark campus, 1301 N. Derbigny St.

Morris Jeff will offer PK through Grade 11 in the 2019-20 school year. Its first senior class will graduate in 2021.


Morris Jeff is the only World School of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) in Orleans Parish offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP) and is a 
Candidate School of the IBO’s globally recognized Diploma Years Programme. IBO provides the curriculum framework behind some of the most rigorous, creative and successful schools in the world.

Morris Jeff Community School Recognized by the International Baccalaureate Organization 
to Offer Middle Years Programme in Grades 6-10 

Morris Jeff Community School, the only World School of the International Baccalaureate Organization in Orleans Parish offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP) to grades K-5, is proud to announce that it has been authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to now offer the Middle Years Programme in grades 6-10, said Morris Jeff Principal Patricia Perkins. 

“This recognition comes on the heels of much work over the past three years to plan, prepare, and execute units of study that are written by our faculty and approved by the IBO,” said Principal Perkins. “It gives us the capability to expand our unique program and continue the high quality level of global learning we are known for.”

Morris Jeff is currently accepting applications for grades PK-10, with a grade added each year until the school is PK-12.  Morris Jeff will ultimately offer the International Baccalaureate’s globally recognized Diploma Years Programme to its high school students by the school year 2019-2020.

VH1 to award Morris Jeff $60k Save The Music grant

VH1 AWARDS MORRIS JEFF COMMUNITY SCHOOL $60K SAVE THE MUSIC GRANT
WHAT:                  
Morris Jeff Community School is the recipient of a $60,000 grant from VH1 Save The Music Foundation. The school is celebrating with a grant presentation that will feature a performance by Morris Jeff students along with special musical guest The Presidio Brass Quintet. The school will use the funds to create a band program for its middle school students. The grant will also provide 35 band instruments for students, along with method books, music stands, music racks and staff training.
Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) Superintendent Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr., the OPSB district member Sarah Usdin, a representative from VH1 and other elected officials will be in attendance at the grant presentation.

Who:         
Morris Jeff Community School
has been recognized nationally as a model for public education. The school was intentionally designed by the community in post-Katrina New Orleans and reflects the racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity of the New Orleans.  By celebrating diversity and inclusion and embracing a rigorous International Baccalaureate curriculum, Morris Jeff serves nearly 900 children in grades PreK-9 and is a 2017 Top 10 Highest Performing School in New Orleans according to The Times-Picayune.

WHY:       
Since her passing on January 29, 2014, the Morris Jeff community has mourned the loss of a beloved and remarkable teacher and friend, Mrs. Jerry Powell Foxworth. Jerry loved to inspire young, inquiring minds and was a mentor to her colleagues. Named “Teacher of the Year” twice, her passion and influence were undeniable.  Jerry was a kind and graceful educator -- calm in disposition yet unwavering in her conviction to educate and mentor. 
Although the pain of her loss will continue throughout the MJCS community, in her memory, MJCS will christen the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten hallway of Morris Jeff Community School the Jerry P. Foxworth Memorial Early Childhood Wing.
