Alexina Medley, education leader, charter advocate and much-loved Principal/CEO of Warren Easton Charter High School, is retiring after a 12-year tenure as head of the “A” rated high school, one of the first high schools in New Orleans to open for families after the 2005 hurricanes and levee failures.
With over 40 years working in education as a Special Education teacher and administrator, Mrs. Medley will leave a lasting impression on Warren Easton, her beloved students and staff, and Louisiana charter schools. Warren Easton Charter High School (3019 Canal St.) will celebrate homecoming week on October 5-14 with activities leading up to to the Homecoming Game on October 14. The undefeated Warren Easton football team, cheerleaders, alumni, band, students and friends of Warren Easton will celebrate with a kick-off, Coronation and Alumni Dances, Day of Service, Pep Rally, golf tournament and Homecoming Parade to the game! Warren Easton Charter High School is hosting its 8th SAVE/No Place for Hate Empowerment Day Program, a unique educational awareness event focusing on effective ways to prevent and reduce youth violence and bullying. Warren Easton Charter High School and its Student Council will join the Student Council members of Lusher, McMain , and McDonogh 35, along with a host of other schools for this year’s SAVE/No Place for Hate Empowerment Day Program. Warren Easton Charter High School has launched its annual Hall of Fame Scholarship campaign for seniors graduating from the oldest public high school in Louisiana. Award-winning actress Sandra Bullock has pledged to match donations raised for the scholarships to be awarded on May 19, 2017.
Each year, notable Easton alumni are inducted into the Hall of Fame based upon contribution to the community, excellence of character, significant professional accomplishments and a demonstrated love for Warren Easton Charter High School. Sandra Bullock was inducted in 2009 as an honorary member. This year, Gulf Coast Bank and Trust and Zito Companies are proud to serve as presenting sponsors of the Hall of Fame event. As part of the ceremonies, college scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors based on academics, financial need, community service and an interview process. In 2016 $120,000 was awarded to 34 seniors, the largest amount ever awarded. Warren Easton Charter High School Foundation will host its annual Warren Easton Hall of Fame ceremony Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium at 3019 Canal St. in New Orleans.
The Class of 2016 Warren Easton Hall of Fame includes Metropolitan Opera star Charles Anthony, world light-heavyweight boxing champion Willie Pastrano, educational leader Danielle Yunusah M.Ed., former athlete and civic leader Allen Rome, civil rights attorney Ronald Wilson, Major, State Police Leonard “Mel” Ryan, and editor and author Carroll Trosclair. The inclusion of the Class of 2016 will bring the total number of members in the Hall of Fame to over 152, including 18 honorary members. Warren Easton Charter High School will host a concert fundraiser on Friday, March 4, 2016, at 7pm at the Warren Easton Charter High School Auditorium, 3019 Canal St., in celebration of the Jazz Band students’ upcoming trip to Cuba.
The concert will be hosted by master of ceremonies Anthony Mackie, film star and Easton alum, with special guest and Easton alum Tonya Boyd-Cannon of The Voice. The event will feature performances by The Young Pinstripes Brass Band, The Original Pinettes Brass Band, Stooges Brass Band, Hot 8 Brass Band and other and special surprise guests. WHAT:
